Portlandia for a day

We started off our day in Portland with a trip to the Rose Garden. Portland is famed for the beautiful types of roses there.
These pinks ones were so soft and reminded me of ballet tutus
My favorites were those that had two colors
All the white flowers reminded me of President Snow from the Hunger Games
So many roses

Even more!
After the Rose Gardens and a delicious lunch at a French restaurant we headed to Powell's Bookstore which is gigantic, with books on every topic you could imagine or hope for, as well as a kind and informed staff. It's locally owned and independent so it holds a place in Portlanders' hearts.

Put a bird on it!

A whole bookcase for arctic and antarctic exploration! Plus two more shelves not seen in the photo!
We worked up an appetite with all the book browsing so we had to head over to Voodoo Donuts. Open 24 hours a day and by lots of bars means it's probably a late night favorite :)
The famed "Voodoo" Donut with red "blood" filling
What a pretty pink box
I was sad to only have one day in Portland but it was a fantastic one!

8 in 2012 Remembrance Run, Walk or Roll

Today I ran the Remembrance Run, Walk or Roll 8k at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu. It was a great race and I set a new PR of about 58 minutes due to the fact I fell in line behind a company running in formation and stuck behind them for a little over half the course. I went in just expecting to do a race but I was really struck by the emotional aspect of it. Most of the people running were part of the army and many more, in service and civilians alike were wearing shirts that said "In Remembrance of -". The entire route was lined with the boots and photos of fallen soldiers. That's another person, every 5 feet, for 5 miles.

A huge thank you needs to be said to my wonderful Dad who, on the first day of a Hawaiian vacation got up at 5:15 am to drive me over to Ford Island. Another race done and only four left to meet my goal of 12 in 2012
Thanks Dad!
Hard to see, but the plane behind me says Hawaii on it

Bend Brewfest

Bend, Oregon has some fantastic breweries and we were lucky enough to be in town during their brewfest. That means drinking lots of beer!

Benham falls, more rapids than actual falls :/
Beautiful mountains in the background from the top of Lava Butte

It looks like Nessie on the left! (it's just a tree though)
Awww. Aren't they cute?
Lava Snowball!
Norah Jones concert. Pretty good but an older crowd than I'm used to

Sarah's Wedding

The reason for our Oregon trip was for my cousin's Sarah's wedding. She held in an old barn and it was absolutely beautiful. My Gram also did all the flower arrangements.

Hiking Terre de Bas with Gaby

One of the things we do during precamp is scout out our trips and activities to see if they would be ok for us to bring the kids to do. Gaby was kind enough to be our hiking guide across the island. Gaby spends a lot of his free time hiking the 3 small trails that are here. Martin and him were typically in the front while Heidi and I were tripping over rocks, laughing and generally being idiots about a constant 10 meters behind them.

Terre de Haut and Plage Pompiere

While we certainly worked a lot and very hard this summer, we did have our days off too. After busting out butts getting everything prepared for the kids we all headed to Terre de Haut together for a day in the sun and sea.

Check out my coconuts! Haha! We cracked open a coconut on the beach

A view of the horseshoe shape that surrounds plage pompiere

Plage pompiere has a horseshoe shape protecting it and part of it is a little island that we climbed to the top of.
Here is the view looking back at Plage Pompiere.
